You can receive the real-time feed from the court reporter's laptop to your laptop, which will give you a draft transcript of the proceedings and do away with the need to take manual notes, leaving you free to pay close attention to the witness.

You can also mark an issue, scroll through the testimony, make an annotation and search for issues you wish to follow up on.  At the end of the proceedings, you have a draft to take back to the office for use while waiting for the final signed and certified copy. 

All you need is a laptop with a serial or USB port and a real-time browser installed on your laptop.
